From the Distiller: Here in the deep south of Islay, we've always had a fire in our belly for adventure. So years ago we scorched a batch of new Missouri oak casks and the result was heavy charring on a ferocious scale, leaving the blackened crocodilian scarring that gives the char its name. And gives Ardbeg Alligator a unique barbecue flavour and spicy bite that'll catch you unawares!
The general release of 2011's much anticipated Ardbeg Committee Release - Alligator. It's named for the high level of char on the inside of some of the casks used for maturation, which makes the wood look like alligator skin. The Alligator is a unique expression for Ardbeg, and indeed for Scotland in general. This young whisky is aged for an undisclosed amount of time in heavily charred new oak barrels, like a bourbon. The resulting whisky is mingled with the standard 10 year old expression and allowed to age further for one more season in refill casks.
The initial release of 10000 bottles sold out in about a week and while this release is a bit large it wont be long before this 'Gator becomes extinct! Distillers Tasting Notes: Ferocious ‘alligator’ charring of new American white oak casks has created a spicy, dark dram of hidden depths, within which lurks deep tarry coffee, barbecue sizzle and sooty aromas. For it is an expression that may prove a challenge to the unwary and test the palate of even the most hardened Ardbeg adventurer. LIMIT: 1 BOTTLE PER CUSTOMER PLEASE
