The Glendalough distillery was founded by a quintet of Irish lads to reintroduce this almost forgotten spirit to the world.
Every drinker certainly knows about Irish whiskey, but very few are aware of Ireland’s oldest spirit. Known as Poitín (pot-cheen) it dates back to the late 6th century. It was the emerald isle’s national spirits until it was outlawed in 1661 by Charles II. In fact it wasn’t until 1997 that it was legalized.
Glendalough Poitin Sherry Cask Finish is bottled at 40%abv, after an extra six months' "finishing" in a sherry cask. Not a full-sized sherry butt, but a cut down version, with extra internal staves. This greatly increases the surface area of wood that the spirit is exposed to.
One obvious effect of this is a very healthy colour which is entirely due to the cask. No caramel has been added.
The other effect is on taste. The wood influence has really narrowed the flavour gap with whiskey.
Tasting Notes:
Aroma: Orange peels and and vanilla, soon followed by red-wine-like sweetness coming through. Very intrigue.
Taste: Quite spicy, with a touch of toasted oak. Juicy fruits.
Finish: Touches of sweet, sticky Sherry last.
