Uncle Knucklehead Indulges: Ashton Maduro Aged #10 with Glenmorangie Signet

Your Uncle Knucklehead believes in harmony. I didn't always. I used to believe in straight ahead competition, creative conflict that sparks tiny combustions in an 8 cylinder overhead cam engine and drives pistons to power. So I always placed myself in the thick of it: causing trouble when the status quo set up shop; grating against the grain when ideas got tired; walking counter-clockwise just to fuck with people's expectations. Competition breeds heroes, bitches.

This Week's Dram: Bunnahabhain 25 Year Old Islay Single Malt

We sail westwards from Scotland this week to the wonderful island of Islay and the quiet man of the island - Bunnahabhain, established in 1881. It's their 25 Year Old Islay Single Malt that we're looking at this week. Even after many years in this industry, I still get the impression that Bunnahabhain is underrated, being somewhat overshadowed by its peatier neighbors on Islay. It's so wrong to compare them and the whisky itself has a much sunnier nature than the largely gray and rather brooding distillery where it's made.

Tasting notes:The Highland Park Odin is a classic HP nose, a veritable, er, Norse god’s nose? But tweaked; not by a bar fight, not by a plastic surgeon: rather by a god applying Larmarckian inheritance evolutionary concepts to himself. That’s the nose! In homage to Odin, I’m...
Craft distilling continues to recapitulate the history of craft brewing. Just as the explosion of craft brewing in the 1990s, and then again about twelve years ago resulted in a shortage of skilled brewers, craft distilling’s rapid growth has led to a shortage of savvy distillers. Here...
